Three Things to Do with Your Partner as You Prepare for Your Birth

As you embark on the incredible journey of preparing for birth, having your partner by your side can make all the difference. The connection you share, the physical support they provide, and the communication you both foster will play a vital role in your labor and delivery experience. As a birth doula in training, I’m passionate about empowering couples through this transformative time. In this blog, I’ll share three meaningful activities you can do with your partner to help you prepare for your birth:

1.) Enhance Your Emotional Connection

Activity: Write Letters to Each Other

Set aside some quiet time to write heartfelt letters to each other about your thoughts, feelings, and hopes regarding the upcoming birth. You can express what you appreciate about one another, your dreams for your family, and any concerns you may have.

Once you’re done, take turns reading your letters aloud. This intimate exchange allows for deeper emotional vulnerability and can spark meaningful conversations. It’s a beautiful way to connect, reflect, and remind each other of the love and support you share as you embark on this journey together. Plus, you can keep the letters as a cherished memory to look back on later!

2.) Prepare Physically Together

Activity: Practice Labor Positions and Comfort Techniques

Set aside time to learn and practice various labor positions and comfort techniques together. Research positions that are beneficial during labor, such as squatting, leaning, or using a birthing ball. You can also explore comfort techniques like massage or counter-pressure.

As you practice these techniques, communicate about what feels good and what helps relieve discomfort. This not only prepares you physically for the labor process but also enhances your teamwork and collaboration as you navigate this experience together. Plus, knowing how your partner will support you during labor can create a calming atmosphere for both of you when the time comes.

3.) Foster Effective Communication

Activity: Establish a "Labor Code" System

Create a simple "labor code" system together to communicate during labor. Discuss and agree on specific words or phrases that convey what you need without having to articulate everything in detail. For example, you might use colors or symbols to represent feelings or needs:

  • 🔴 Red for needing a break or to change positions

  • 🟢 Green for feeling good and wanting to keep going

  • 🟡 Yellow for wanting reassurance or comfort

Practicing this system before labor can help both of you feel more comfortable expressing your needs, especially when words might be hard to find. This way, your partner can advocate for you, ensuring effective communication throughout the process.

As you prepare for your birth, remember that the journey is as much about your mental and emotional experience as it is about physical readiness. By engaging in these activities together, you’ll strengthen your bond, enhance your physical preparation, and foster open communication—all essential elements for a positive birth experience.

I’m excited to support couples on this journey as a birth doula, and I have openings for birth support in the upcoming months.
